As you can see despite not being your typical ‘touristy’ area, this location is ideal for woodland walks, waterfalls, steam trains and much more, all on the doorstep! Whatever your interest, Dolgoch and the surrounding area around offers something for everyone.

Steam Trains

This area of North Wales is a paradise for Steam Railway enthusiasts, or just those who like a good ride on a traditional steam train!
Dolgoch Falls station on the Talyllyn Railway, just minutes from our garden, offers steam trains to Nant Gwernol or Tywyn on historic locomotives and carriages. Nearby are the Corris Railway (1 mile of track) and Fairbourne Railway, with further options including Ffestiniog, Welsh Highland, Llanberis Lake, Snowdon Mountain, Vale of Rheidol, Bala Lake, and Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railways.

Walking

As well as some gorgeous woodland walks from the cottage door and a number of walks from various stations on the railway there are numerous other places locally for walkers to enjoy.
The Wales Coast Path from Tywyn offers scenic views south to Aberdyfi and north to Fairbourne. Nearby, Cadair Idris can be climbed via the five-hour Mynfordd Path past Llyn Cau, while easier walks at Ynysymaengwyn Caravan Park pass woodland, mansion ruins, and the river Dysynni to the sea. Snowdon is about 1 hour 20 minutes away, with climbing or a railway option.

Waterfalls

The falls at Dolgoch are famous throughout North Wales, and many people travel here just to see them.
From Dolgoch Holidays, the lower falls are a short walk under the viaduct, with a steeper mile-long hike through the woods to the middle and upper falls and a hillside meadow. At Nant Gwernol, a path alongside waterfalls leads to an old quarry and the top of a former slate incline.

Corris Craft Centre

There are a number of unique Craft Workshops here including pottery painting (for adults and children).
Candle making, the opportunity to watch glass blowing, wood carving and a wooden toy shop amongst others. This is a good place to spend a wet day and buy unusual gifts. The café here does a good trade too!

Local Art

The falls at Dolgoch are famous throughout North Wales, and many people travel here just to see them.
Our cottages feature artwork and photographs, many from local artists via Artworks Aberdyfi, a not-for-profit supporting professional artists through sales and exhibitions. More local art can be seen at the Museum of Modern Art in Machynlleth.

Castles

Wales is famous for its castles – many of which are managed by CADW (Welsh Heritage) there are two in close proximity to the cottage with the possibility of others such as Caernarfon and Conwy if you want to go further afield.
Castell-y-Bere, a ruined castle near Abergynolwyn, can be reached on foot or by car and offers exploration, a historic well, and information boards. About an hour from Dolgoch, Harlech features a well-preserved castle with tower views and a fantastic nearby beach.

Beaches

There are many gorgeous beaches in the area, the closest is Tywyn Beach approx. 15 minutes drive away (or a short walk from the Talylln Railway station).
Tywyn Beach is sandy but stonier than Aberdyfi, with bigger waves, rocks, possible dolphins, and a 6,000-year-old forest visible at low tide. Nearby beaches include sandy Aberdyfi (playground, donkey rides, lifeboat), Fairbourne (sandy at low tide), Barmouth (sand dunes), and Harlech (large sandy beach by the castle).

Birdwatching

The area is excellent for birdwatching, with species from garden birds like Siskins and Nuthatches to stream Dippers, woodland Pied Flycatchers, and soaring Red Kites and Buzzards.
From the cottage, a 5-mile walk or a short drive leads to Bird Rock, home to Choughs and the UK’s only inland nesting Cormorants. About 30 minutes away, Cors Dyfi hosts a rare breeding pair of Ospreys with viewing opportunities, while nearby RSPB Ynys-hir offers woodland walks, pond-dipping, and abundant birdlife.

Caves and Caverns

There are a number of interesting underground venues to explore in the area - great for a wet day!
Near Dolgoch, small caves can be explored with a torch and waterproof footwear, or for bigger adventures, try King Arthur’s Labyrinth or Corris Mine Explorers. About an hour away, Llechwedd Slate Caverns offers mining history, a reconstructed village, a quarry funicular, and activities like mountain biking, zip-lines, and underground trampolines.

Although we try to keep this up to date please check with each location that the details are correct.

Terms and Conditions - Number 5

OCCUPANCY – You can arrive at the property after 4.00pm on the first day of your booking and you need to leave by 10.00am on the final day of your booking.

DEPOSIT –  A deposit of £75 is payable at the time of booking to secure the reservation (£50 for short breaks) with the balance payable one month prior to commencement of holiday. If full payment is not received by the due date, the guest will be deemed to have cancelled their booking.

CANCELLATIONS – The deposit will be refunded minus a service charge of £25 if cancellation occurs more than one month prior to your holiday. However, if you cancel within one month of your holiday dates, your refund will depend on our ability to re-let. We will be as fair as possible in these circumstances.

IF WE CANCEL – we will make every effort to honour you booking.  If, due to circumstances beyond our control we have to cancel more than four weeks before the start of your holiday, we will refund your deposit and offer a 25% discount on your next booking with us.  If we have to cancel four weeks or less before your arrival date, we will refund the full amount you have paid and offer a 25% discount on your next booking with us.

SAFETY & INSURANCE – The property is insured for public liability but it is the guest’s responsibility to insure their own belongings and against any losses that may occur should the need to cancel their holiday arise. Guests are responsible for taking due care and attention and the owners can accept no responsibility for personal injury or loss or damage to guests’ property however caused. The property is equipped with fire blanket, fire extinguishers and smoke alarm and all furniture and equipment provided conforms to current regulations. 

CAR PARKING – Free car parking for one car is available in the car park by the hotel (please display car park pass provided). You may drive your car up to the property to load or unload but must return it to the car park immediately afterwards.

SLEEPING ACCOMMODATION – The property is equipped for 6 people with one double bedroom (with en-suite), one twin bedroom and a bunk bedroom.

BED LINEN AND TOWELS – Bed linen, towels and tea towels are included in the cost of rental and beds will be made up and ready for your arrival. Guests are asked to strip the bed linen from used beds before their departure, leaving it on the bed. Please note you will need to bring your own towels for use on the beach, if required.

SHOPPING & SUPPLIES – There is a small shop in Bryn-Crug however the nearest large shops are in Tywyn (4 miles from the property) where there is a good selection of shops including both Spa and Co-op supermarkets.  Asda online will deliver to the door.  We work on a trust basis with our own stocks of tea, coffee, sugar etc. i.e. You are welcome to use them but please replace before you leave.

CLEANING – Guests are responsible for leaving the property in a clean and tidy state at the end of their holiday. The property will be thoroughly checked, cleaned and serviced between occupancies, but we do reserve the right to levy a charge to recover rectification costs if the property is not left in a satisfactory condition.

SMOKING – Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the property.

PETS – Well behaved pets will be considered, by prior arrangement, on the condition that they are not left unsupervised in the property and that they will not be allowed on the beds or furniture. You will be responsible for the cost of making good any damage caused by your pet (or a pet belonging to someone who visits you). The shared garden is used by small children – please supervise your pet. Do not allow it to foul the garden and, if it does, clear up any mess immediately, disposing of it in the outside bin.

WATER & DRAINAGE – The property shares a private water supply and drainage system. Guests are asked to observe simple precautions so as not to cause damage to the system. Details are in the information pack at the property and the owners can accept no responsibility for disruption to a holiday if these are ignored.

BREAKAGES AND DAMAGES – In the unfortunate event of breakages or damages guests are responsible for the full cost of replacement / making good. Guests are asked to kindly report any such occurrences on the telephone numbers provided in order that appropriate arrangements can be put in hand to effect repair / replacement with minimal disruption to your holiday.

WiFi – we try, but do not guarantee, to make internet access available and, where we do, this is for moderate use only, not for heavy use such as gaming or streaming.

External

This two-storey terraced house has a lounge and kitchen on the first floor, and three bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor.  There is space outside the property to load or unload a car but no long term parking.  Car parking is on a tarmac car park about 100 metres level walk along a tarmac driveway.

The front garden is through a double gate in the left as you approach the property.  It has a level tarmac surface about 240cm wide along the front of the houses.  To the left of this is a raised patio (10cm step) with crazy paving interspersed with flower-beds.  The grass rear garden is accessed via a sloping ramp from the rear gate (after climbing three concrete steps), or the top of the exterior stairs.  Parts of the garden are extremely steep as the house is built into the hillside.  Special care is needed in wet or icy weather, when it can be very slippery. 

Access to the first floor main entrance is via an external wooden staircase (13 steps) to the right of the block and 6 metres of level timber walkway about 1.5m wide, constructed of 15cm planks laid lengthways, with gaps of about 2cm between them.  It is also possible to access this walkway from the rear garden gate – three concrete steps and a sloping path.  The timber walkway and outside steps are lit at night.  There is a second external door at the rear of the property at ground floor level, leading directly into a bedroom.  Both external doors have sills approximately 15cm high.

Internal

Ceiling heights are approximately 225cm.  Many electric power points are situated about 50cm above skirting board height, although some are just above skirting boards.  Doors are standard domestic width.  Lighting throughout the property is good.  It is decorated in shades of beige, terracotta ad chocolate brown (bedroom furnishings are patterned).  There is no telephone, but Vodaphone and O2 mobile phones have a signal at the front of the property and there is a public phone box in the car park.  Smoke alarms are fitted and fire extinguishers at the top and bottom of the stairs. 

The main first floor entrance door leads from the timber walkway into a spacious, open kitchen, which extends to the right and is fitted with standard height units and a vinyl floor.  A few feet in front of the entrance door, is the staircase down to the ground floor.  The door to the lounge lies across the kitchen to the right.  The lounge is large with a laminate floor.  It contains 2 sofas, a chair, a 6 seat dining set and a multi-fuel stove.  The TV and CD/DVD have remote controls. 

Accessed by a door from the kitchen the stairs are carpeted and have a 90 degree right turn two-thirds of the way down.  They are narrow with full height walls and a handrail to one side.  At the bottom of the stairs is a narrow hall.  The first door on the left if the twin bedroom.  The first door on the right leads to the double bedroom (there is an ensuite shower room here containing a shower cubicle and WC and wash basin at standard heights).  Both bedrooms have space to move around the beds.  The second door on the left leads to a small room with full size bunk beds.  There are bedside ad ceiling lights in all bedrooms.  All the ground floor is carpeted except for the bathroom. 

The second door on the right leads to the bathroom, with a ceramic tiled floor.  The shower is over the bath and the water temperature is controlled by a manually-adjusted mixer tap.  The bathroom also contains a wash basin and WC at standard heights.

What to bring:

  • Food, groceries and toiletries – there is a small Co-Op and Spar in Tywyn (about 4 miles away) which are open late each day except Sunday and bank holidays.  Asda will do an online delivery to the door from Shrewsbury if you book in advance.  There are also many nice pubs and restaurants to eat out in the surrounding area so you don’t need to cook every night!
  • Toilet rolls (to replace the couple provided at the start of your stay)
  • Cots, beds, equipment and supplies for any babies, small children and dogs
  • Insect repellent as in summer the midges can sometimes be a nuisance
  • You will need to bring any washing powder and dishwasher tablets you need however, please ensure they are suitable for use with septic tanks (it should say on the label) as bleaches, biological and anti-bacterial cleaners can cause the drainage system to fail. Do not use all in one dishwasher tablets, just basic ones.
  • If you like to explore on foot we recommend you bring stout shoes or walking boots.  The path to the Lower Falls is fairly level and well surfaced, but if you venture up the sides of the ravine to the Upper Falls the paths are steep and rocky in places (there are handrails).

The main first floor entrance door leads from the timber walkway into the open plan kitchen, which extends to the left and is fitted with standard height units and a laminate floor.  A few feet in front of the entrance door (around the free-standing fridge freezer), is the staircase down to the ground floor.  The lounge/dining area lies through the kitchen to the left.  The lounge/dining area is laminate.  It contains 1 sofa, 2 easy chairs, and a rectangular 4 seat dining table and an electric fire.  The TV, DVD and CD player have remote controls.

Accessed from the kitchen the stairs are carpeted and go straight down to the narrow hallway downstairs.  They are narrow with banisters and a handrail to one side.  The first door straight ahead to the left is the main bedroom (there is an ensuite electric toilet and small wash basin off this bedroom).  There is a need to turn around here and find the bathroom (now on the right of the hall) and the twin bedroom is straight ahead at this point.  The main bedroom has space to move around the beds.  In the twin bedroom there is space between the beds but both beds are against the side walls.  There are bedside and ceiling lights in the main bedroom and ceiling lights in the twin bedroom.  All the ground floor is carpeted except for the bathroom.  The bathroom has a vinyl floor with a large shower cubicle.  The bathroom also contains a wash basin and WC at standard heights.
